My Feeding Journey: Kate's Story

Name: Kate

How many children do you have: 2 boys with a 3rd on the way!

Ages of children: 6 years old, 3 years old, and one due in July 2018.

Describe your feeding journey with your 2nd child in one word:  Triumphant

Why? Both of my children had a lot of difficulty transferring milk as newborns and my youngest also went on a 4 week nursing strike starting at 2 weeks of age. Our nursing difficulties seemed insurmountable and I was prepared to exclusively pump for him as I did for my oldest. However, I finally found a lactation consultant that was knowledgeable enough to be able to determine the reason for the difficulties and she worked closely with me on a plan to get through it. And we did! By 6 weeks of age, he was nursing again. By 8 weeks of age, he was transferring milk with no problem. I put the pump away and never looked back. He loved his "Mommy Milk" and nursed until he self-weaned just before he turned 3.

What was the most challenging part? Getting through a month long nursing strike!

What did you find enjoyable or rewarding? I enjoyed the quiet time with him when he would nurse to sleep before naps and bedtime.

What do you wish you knew then that you know now? That everything would work out in the end and not to stress out about it so much.
